Here’s a few tips on why NOT to DIY changes to the title of your property.

DIY is great for a lot of things, i.e. furniture, your kids dollhouse, minor home repairs and painting. It is not great for everything, i.e. electrical, plumbing, HVAC or surgery.

People are always eager to find a better way to get things done and often price is a consideration. Most people are aware of what they are good at and what they should have a professional do. When it comes to divorce, real estate and investing, sometimes people think they are more talented than they actually are.

In our world at Quick Claim USA, we encounter many people who believe that do-it-yourself divorce, real estate and title changes to real property are something they can easily do themselves. Why pay a professional? Here’s why:

  • Divorce and real estate are governed by various statutes in each state
  • Property owned in more than one state will have additional statutes and considerations
  • Title changes must be done correctly or there can be serious repercussions down the road
  • In the long run, you may not save time or money if things need to be corrected that could have been avoided
  • What you don’t know may cost you more later

I have written many articles over the last few years discussing these various topics. I continue to see clients after they have taken the DIY approach and things are now messed up. PLEASE contact your attorney, title company, and/or tax professional to discuss any changes you currently have or may have in the future when it comes to your real property and the title of real property. Divorce is very often the reason for title changes and I want to encourage you to seek legal advice to avoid potential pitfalls.

Over the past 20+ years, I have seen and heard just about everything and I am amazed at how many problems people create for themselves to save a dollar or two. Call me, there is never any obligation to talk with one of us. Don’t DIY without making sure you CYA.
